You’ve asked ChatGPT for blog post ideas. You’ve used Claude to finetune some emails. Gemini is helping you clean up website copy. Great! You’re using AI to help you with marketing content. But … what kind of results are you getting? Can you actually use AI for better marketing?
AI isn’t saving you time if you’re spending hours editing and rewriting AI-generated content. AI isn’t helpful if everyone is scrolling past your content because it sounds general and generic.
If you’ve found AI to be less “magic” and more “meh,” don’t give up on using AI to help you craft better marketing content. It’s not AI’s fault! You probably didn’t train it well enough on your brand and business.
Here’s how you can use AI for better marketing.
Get clear on your business and your message.
If you can’t clearly communicate about your business, your brand, and your marketing message, how in the world can you expect AI to help?
Carve out some time to think about your business.
- Are you clearly communicating the problem you solve for your customers and clients?
- Do you have a solid offer and a price point that makes people say, “Take my money!”
- Are you investing in the right marketing channels or platforms? Maybe you’re trying to be in all the places and you need to focus on one or two areas.
Build a stack of foundational marketing documents.
If you’re a small business owner or solopreneur, you probably have a lot of information stored in your head. Let’s transfer all that knowledge to a stack of marketing documents for training AI.
The trick to getting great results from AI is to train it on your brand. Give it several critical documents so it begins to learn your brand voice, your target customers, and your marketing message. Those combined with specific instructions and detailed prompts ensure you’re getting great first drafts that won’t require as much rewriting.
Plus, these are documents any business should have on hand. Yes, they’re helpful for training AI, but you can reference a brand message guide, for example, for all your marketing needs.

Use and refine.
Now that you’ve given AI thorough training on your business and brand, it’s time to get to work. Give AI detailed prompts and specific instructions on what you need. You’ve uploaded your documents for reference. So, your results should be loads better than what you’ve gotten in the past.
Keep refining and training AI. Give it feedback on what it’s done well and how it can improve the content. Upload additional materials as needed.
Just like any other member of your team, AI needs feedback. Don’t be afraid to give it!
Save more time with Custom GPTs.
And, here’s one more time-saving tip. I’ve been using ChatGPT as my primary AI tool. I took a course to learn how to create a Custom GPT and it’s been a real game changer.
Here’s an example of how it could work for you: Let’s say you want to use ChatGPT to draft blog posts. You’ll create a Custom GPT specifically for blogs. Upload all the marketing documents you’ve created. Give it detailed instructions on writing blog posts for your brand. That might include certain keywords to use. Or how to structure the blog posts with section headers and bullet points.
Create a detailed outline or notes for the blog post topic. Then, give it the Custom GPT. I think you’ll be surprised that it can create a pretty good draft. Give it feedback on the content, style, length, etc. until you have a draft that’s at least 80% ready to go.
Then, you can spend a few minutes making edits or adding a personal story.
What might have taken you a couple of hours is done in maybe 20 minutes. Plus, when you use a Custom GPT, you don’t have to upload documents or give the same feedback every time.
[Note: You will need a paid ChatGPT account to create a Custom GPT, but for $20/month, it’s worth it.]
If you’re a solopreneur or a business with a small team, try putting AI on your team. It’s not a replacement for people. It’s not a substitute for skilled writers and marketing professionals. But when you take the time to develop foundational marketing materials and then train AI on your brand, you can get better results.
Free up some of your time and mental energy spent on writing social media posts for big-picture thinking about your overall marketing strategy, thought leadership content, and innovative products and services. That’s the real magic in using AI.
